Pixel 3 XL prototype leak confirms dreaded display notch

by Brandon Russell | June 7, 2018

Months before Google is set to unveil the Pixel 3 XL, two pictures of a working prototype have leaked. The images appear to showcase a design similar to last year’s Pixel 2 XL, save for one major difference: the Pixel 3 XL clearly displays a notch, a polarizing trend that’s been adopted by nearly every Android manufacturer in 2018.

The design of the alleged Pixel 3 XL was first unveiled by a leak late last month—something we quickly followed up with our own renders. Turns out, our concepts weren’t far off; it looks like Google has indeed decided to keep the aluminum build of previous models.

If so, expect Google’s new Pixel models to lack wireless charging. The good news is that the leak suggests the Pixel 3 XL will feature front-facing stereo speakers, which has become a staple of the Pixel line.

Adding to the authenticity of this leak is the “crosshatch” codename shown in the menu. The information could have been faked, of course, but it lines up with previous leaks about Google’s upcoming devices.

The most curious thing about today’s leak is that the images seemingly confirm the Pixel 3 XL will feature two front-facing cameras. It’s unclear what the second sensor is for, but it’s possible Google is gearing up to introduce a competitor to Apple’s Face ID.

If the Pixel 3 XL does feature facial recognition, the device will have one advantage over the iPhone X: a fingerprint sensor. Offering both is a nice way for Google not to completely hedge its bet on one technology.

Google last year released the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL in October, so expect a similar release timeframe for the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL.
