Jared Leto’s portrayal of the Joker in Suicide Squad was, shall we say, different. The actor put a Hot Topic spin on the Crown Prince of Crime, turning the iconic character into the frontman of a euro techno punk group. Needless to say, it fell well short of Heath Ledger’s take on the character in The Dark Knight.
Yet, Leto’s portrayal has allegedly resonated with audiences enough that Warner Bros. wants to give him a standalone movie. According to Variety, Leto will star and executive produce a standalone movie about the Joker, with an aim to build on the foundation set by Suicide Squad.
Essentially, Leto’s movie will be a stepping stone toward making a larger Suicide Squad universe, in which Warner Bros. explores some of DC’s most famous villains. Margot Robbie, who portrayed Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, is already set to star in her own spinoff known as Birds of Prey.
What’s strange is Warner Bros. is already making an origin story for the Joker, which will reportedly star Joaquin Phoenix. That movie will exist in a completely different universe. Given how little Leto’s Joker was in Suicide Squad, it’s hard to get thrilled about the possibility of him appearing in a standalone movie.
Variety claims that everything is in the preliminary stages right now, so it’s unclear when production will get underway. A screenwriter hasn’t even been chosen, according to the report.
The next movie set in the DC Extended Universe will be Aquaman, which is set to hit theaters this December.
