Mowgli trailer sees a dark retelling of The Jungle Book

The first trailer for Mowgli is here and its main intent is on being a darker and different version of The Jungle Book than the one we saw from Disney two years ago. You may question the need for two live-action adaptations of the same story within two years, but Mowgli aims to deliver something new.

Directed by renowned actor Andy Serkis, Mowgli tells the story of Mowgli – the young boy raised by wolves in the jungle. Unlike the Disney version, Serkis’ interpretation seems to tackle on new material instead of just rehashing the story set forth by the original animated version.

In the trailer, Mowgli has much more interaction with humans. However, the CGI animals that served as the backbone to the story are still front and center. Characters liked Baloo, Kaa, Akela, Vihaa and Shere Khan are displayed, and they are voiced by some big-time Hollywood talent that includes Cate Blanchett, Benedict Cumberbatch and Christian Bale.

Scenes cut back and forth to a much grittier world than we’re used to seeing in a Jungle Book story. Overall, we’re intrigued by Mowgli. It looks like an interested retelling of a story we’re quite familiar with, so we look forward to see the new interpretation.

Mowgli is in theaters October 19.
