The Merc with a Mouth arrived in impressive fashion this past week, knocking Avengers: Infinity War off the top of the box office, ending its three-week reign. Deadpool 2 took in $125 million during its opening weekend domestically and $301 million globally.
The $125 million domestic take was good for the second largest R-rated opening, slightly behind the original Deadpool’s $132 million. While it’s disappointing it wasn’t able to break the record, the opening is still impressive and that should continue moving forward given its stellar reviews.
Avengers: Infinity War came in second place, taking in another $28 million, inching closer to eclipsing the $600 million mark domestically, the third Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to do so.
Overseas, Deadpool 2 took in $176 million, breaking the record as the largest R-rated opening weekend ever.
Deadpool 2 continued the unstoppable pace comic book movies have been on this year. It all started with Black Panther in February and continued with Avengers: Infinity War last month. Now, with Deadpool 2 bursting onto the scene in such impressive fashion, it seems to be the year of the comic book movie will continue.
