Groot’s last word to Rocket in Avengers: Infinity War will break your heart

We’re still reeling from the shocking end to Avengers: Infinity War. After ten years of buildup, Marvel Studios concluded the film in a completely unexpected way. It certainly changes the outlook of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes going into Avengers 4, which is set to hit theaters a year from now.

Note: spoilers ahead

At the end of Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos snaps his fingers after collecting the Infinity Stones, resulting in half the universe disappearing into ash, including a number of our favorite Avengers. One of those characters was Groot (the adolescent version), who looked utterly terrified as he reached out toward Rocket Raccoon.

Groot says something to Rocket as he reaches out a hand for comfort, but is ultimately vaporized out of existence. It’s a heartbreaking moment that’s made even more heartbreaking when you hear what Groot actually said.

A user on Twitter reached out to Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn and asked what Groot’s last line was before he disappeared. Gunn obliged, but I kind of wish he didn’t. You can see that exchange below.

That’s so incredibly sad. Throughout the entire movie, Groot is standoffish and defiant, more interested in his video game than he is with saving the universe. But we love him anyway, so to see him reach out to Rocket like that, in a moment of helplessness, is such an emotionally powerful moment.

Rocket may not be Groot’s biological father, but the two have formed a deep bond that goes beyond their bounty hunting roots. After Adult Groot from the original Guardians of the Galaxy perished, Rocket raised Baby Groot, so it makes sense for Adolescent Groot to view him as a parental figure.

Needless to say, Marvel fans are saddened by Gunn’s revelation. So much so that the director felt the need to respond again. Hopefully, this isn’t the end of Adolescent Groot and Rocket, because if it is, we might never be the same.

We’ll never look at Infinity War in the same way.
