Nintendo doesn’t just want to have a wildly successful console. The company also wants to be a fierce competitor in mobile, where it has already dabbled with software like Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes, and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp.
In an interview with Nikkei, new Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said he wants the company to have a larger smartphone presence, with a goal of turning its mobile games into a $900 billion business.
“From what I can see, smartphone games are the ones I want to expand the most,” Furukawa said. “The idea that something will emerge that transforms into something big, in the same manner as game consoles, is the defining motive of the Nintendo business.”
Nintendo recently announced a partnership with Cygames to bring Dragalia Lost, an RPG, to smartphones this summer. The upcoming title could be one of many games Nintendo releases over the coming months, as Furukawa puts a greater priority on the mobile market.
With hundreds of millions of smartphones on the market, it would certainly be in Nintendo’s best interest to further explore mobile devices. Super Mario Run was a lot of fun and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is a great way to spend a few hours. It’s likely we’ll see more Nintendo partnerships to streamline the release of mobile titles.
Furukawa’s plans to further expand into mobile comes on the heels of a year-over-year profit increase of more than 500 percent for Nintendo, with Switch hardware and software sales off the charts. Nintendo recently confirmed it will share more details about Switch Online, along with details about new games destined for the portable console.
