Star Wars Resistance has been announced as the latest in the animated Star Wars efforts, and this time we’re jumping to yet another time period in the saga.
Lucasfilm has learned how to turn gaps in the overall Star Wars narrative into very successful animated series. The Clone Wars filled in unknown adventures between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, while Rebels filled in the gaps between the latter and A New Hope. The company behind Star Wars is hoping to repeat that magic with its latest effort, Star Wars Resistance.
Set in the time period before The Force Awakens, Star Wars Resistance is set to follow Kazuda Xiono, a young pilot that has joined the Resistance in its early days. Xiono will be tasked with spying on the First Order as its threat continues to grow across the galaxy.
In addition to Xiono, we can also expect to see fan-favorite BB-8 roll through the series. The little astromech’s owner, Poe Dameron, is in the series as well with Oscar Isaac voicing the character. Captain Phasma will show up as well with Gwendoline Christie lending her voice to the role.
Star Wars Resistance will have a new flavor
Dave Filoni, a veteran of the last two Star Wars series, returns as executive producer on Star Wars Resistance, and he has a lot of ideas. “The idea for Star Wars Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots” said Filoni. “My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that’s been a big influence on me. There’s a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time.”
The series is also going in a new direction for the franchise and will be influenced by anime. Only a logo has been released so far, but the flavor definitely shines through.
Star Wars Resistance is set to debut on the Disney Channel this fall and then will move over to Disney XD. An exact premeire date was not announced.
