The long gestating standalone Harley Quinn movie just took a big step toward becoming a reality – settling on a director. Set within the confines of the DC Universe, the Harley Quinn spinoff starring Margot Robbie will be directed by Cathy Yan.
Cathy Yan started off as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal for which she earned multiple front page stories before she moved on to directing short films. She made her feature film debut with Dead Pigs earlier this year. In being Warner Bros’ selection to direct one of its upcoming DC blockbusters, it presents a great opportunity for Yan while solidifying the studio’s focus on diversifying its director selection to include more women.
Following in the footsteps of Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins, Yan will be second women to direct a DC movie.
As for the movie, it will be based on the “Birds of Prey” comic book storyline. Within the plot arc, Harley Quinn joins forces with, among other characters, Black Canary, Batgirl and Huntress. It’s not clear whether any or all of these character will appear in the movie. Christina Hodson wrote the script for the movie, but it is still being worked on, according to reports.
The Harley Quinn movie is expected to begin shooting some time later this year or possibly in early 2019. Aside from the Harley Quinn movie, Margot Robbie is also attached to numerous DC projects, including Suicide Squad 2 and Gotham City Sirens.
A release date for the Harley Quinn spinoff has not been officially announced.
