Westworld showrunners tease full spoilers, but ‘roll’ out a video of a different kind

When Westworld debuted in 2016, it promised a world full of mystery and intrigue. The story of an an old west trapped inside a theme park meant for people to indulge themselves. Then, within weeks of the premiere, fans on Reddit were picking through all the clues writers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy had left and were dropping spoilers left and right before shows even aired. So with season 2’s premiere just around the corner, Nolan and Joy threatened to post every spoiler for the show on Reddit so that people who wanted to know could go find out. And now, they’ve done that. Kind of.

With some reassurance that my anticipation for the series wouldn’t be ruined by watching the video I clicked in:

The video begins with a monologue from Bernard (Jeffrey Wright), but after just a minute, it glitches out and switches to actress Evan Rachel Wood, who plays Dolores, accompanied by Angela Sarafyan, who plays Clementine. In the spirit of Westworld, the duo performs a piano-backed rendition of a modern classic: Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.”

That’s right.

Well over a week after April Fools’ Day, the Westworld cast and crew pulled one over on those hoping to unlock the show’s secrets ahead of time. Well done, team.

Now the question is, can the team manage to hide its clues this time around? Or will the internet unravel the mystery once again before it even begins to pick up speed?

Westworld season 2 premieres April 22 on HBO.
