Instagram update adds sleek new portrait mode

Instagram on Tuesday introduced an update that adds a few new features, one of which jumps on the portrait mode bandwagon.

The portrait mode, dubbed Focus, will allow users to take DSLR-like images by adding a depth of field effect to photos.

“As soon as there’s someone in the shot, you’ll notice the person stays in focus while the background softly blurs,” said Instagram. When activating Focus, the subject will stay in focus while the background will blur, creating a cool effect that is already available in most modern smartphone cameras.

Instagram’s second new feature is not as flashy, but will likely end up being used much more often. It is a new way to tag friends in pictures through stickers. Instead of just writing out their handle in text, you can select a new “@mention” sticker.

The update is now rolling out for iOS and Android users, but not all will be getting the features. Focus will only be available for the iPhone 6S and newer and some select Android devices.
