Chinese brands have big expansion plans for 2018

The mobile industry isn’t booming all around the world like before, so companies are seeking to enter new markets overseas. It’s the Chinese brands in particular that are setting their sights on emerging markets to increase shipments and grab additional market share. Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo have each decided to put more resources in countries like India where mobile devices are rising fast.

Xiaomi, for example, is seeing its brand become trusted in emerging markets where quality is usually an issue. The company is now able to maintain 10 million units shipped per month. The figure could grow and total as many as 150 million units for 2018, according to DigiTimes.

Sources expect Huawei to focus on premium products. Its shipments have rebounded, sources say, and the new P20 should get a push in many parts of the world. Huawei’s goal is to ship 200 million phones this year.

Oppo and Vivo, two brands owned by BBK Electronics, aren’t going all-in on high-end hardware just yet. Both will remain focused on delivering quick performance on a budget despite growth rates hitting a speed bump in 2017. New phones are set to launch in the second quarter, and the same goes for OnePlus (another BBK-owned brand). All of them will continue investing in emerging markets like India.

Where you won’t see any of them make a significant push is in the United States. As we saw with Huawei earlier this year, there are concerns from the government that companies like Huawei and ZTE are spying on behalf of China. So it wouldn’t be wise to enter the U.S. unless political tension cools down, which isn’t expected anytime soon.
