How to add GIFs to your Note 8’s Always-On Display

Samsung’s Always-On Display (AOD) feature is one of the company’s best innovations, allowing users to quickly glimpse information without powering their screen on. Now, Samsung is letting users add some needed flair to the feature by adding GIF support.

With the new feature, users can easily add their favorite GIF, whether it be one of Samsung’s stock options or a Spongebob meme. You can also create your own GIF if the millions available don’t strike your fancy.

To add a GIF, just jump into the AOD display option in your settings and you’ll see a new “Add GIF” button. For as fun as the new feature is, there are a few caveats, as Android Police notes.

There’s a limit on length, and GIFs only play once, rather than endlessly looping. That might defeat the purpose of a GIF, but it means your phone’s battery won’t be drained too quickly. If you want to trigger another loop, just double tap on the GIF.

Samsung’s AOD feature has added expanded customization options before, like the ability to add images. GIF support isn’t crucial to the AOD experience, but it’s a fun way for Samsung to make the feature more unique.

You’ll need the latest version of Samsung’s Always-On Display feature in order to add GIFs to your device screen. The feature currently works on the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8 Plus, and Galaxy Note 8.
