One of Uber’s autonomous vehicles crashed into a pedestrian this weekend, resulting in the first known death caused by a self-driving car.
The accident took place in Tempe, Arizona, according to ABC 15, one of a few cities Uber has been testing out its autonomous vehicles. According to the report, a woman was reportedly outside of the crosswalk when the Uber vehicle struck her.
Once the accident occurred, the woman was taken to a local hospital where she later died due to injuries sustained in the crash. Uber has confirmed that the car was traveling with a safety driver behind the wheel while in autonomous mode. Beyond that, details of the accident have been scarce thus far.
Uber has halted its entire autonomous vehicle program for the time being. This is the first known case of an autonomous vehicle killing a pedestrian.
There is sure to be some form of ramifications that will not only affect Uber, but all other companies embarking on their own autonomous driving program as a result of the accident.
