Android 8.1 Oreo making the rounds to a Moto phone

As long as you have the Android One edition, your Moto X4 is receiving a software update for the latest version of Android.

Owners of the phone who purchased directly from Google for use on Project Fi are getting Android 8.1 Oreo this week. The phone was already on Oreo, but this makes it one of the first to be on the same version as Google’s Pixel devices. Normally we see phones and tablets jump to a major release but not the small, incremental versions rolled out over time.

There’s a reason why the Android One edition of the Moto X4 is moving so quickly, though. Motorola isn’t actually handling the software updates. Google’s initiative for fast, clean takes on Android put software updates in its own control despite other companies producing the hardware.

The software update doesn’t just include Android 8.1 but also a boost to the March 2017 security patch level.

Motorola doesn’t sell the Android One edition as its exclusive for Project Fi customers; however, if you manage to get your hands on a unit, it can be used freely on any network. And you’ll continue getting software updates in a timely manner from Google.
