The Star Wars universe is set to expand yet again, and this time it’s on television.

A live-action Star Wars television series has been on the drawing boards for years, but with an announcement on Thursday, it appears it is finally going to become a reality. Lucasfilm has announced that Jon Favreau will be writing and serving as executive producer on the first live-action TV series set in a galaxy far, far away.

“I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.”

“If you told me at 11 years old that I would be getting to tell stories in the Star Wars universe, I wouldn’t have believed you. I can’t wait to embark upon this exciting adventure,” said Favreau.

This isn’t Favreau’s first involvement with Star Wars having voiced a character in the Clone Wars series and lending his vocal talents to an alien in the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story. The filmmaker has a long relationship with Lucasfilm parent company Disney as well having directed Iron Man and Iron Man 2. He is also currently in production on a live-action remake of The Lion King.

There is currently no release date known for the upcoming Star Wars series, but it is planned for Disney’s streaming service which is expected to launch in 2019.
