Mary Poppins Returns trailer – The magic returns

After what has seemed like ages since it was filmed, let alone announced, Disney has finally released the first footage from Mary Poppins Returns.

Michael and Jane Banks have grown up, with the former still living in the house on Cherry Tree Lane. With three children to care for – Annabel, John, and George – Michael suffers a personal loss prompting Mary Poppins to finally return to the home to make things right.

This time around, Mary Poppins is played by Emily Blunt and she is joined by Lin-Manual Miranda as Jack, a lamplighter who was the apprentice of Bert (Dick Van Dyke) in the original film. Van Dyke does appear in the film, but in a new role.

Other new characters this time around will be Angela Lansbury as the Balloon Lady, Meryl Streep as Topsy Turvy-Poppins, Colin Firth as William Weatherall Wilkins, and additional new characters will be introduced.

Mary Poppins creator P.L. Travers was notoriously not fond of the original film as detailed in the film Saving Mr. Banks, and was especially unhappy with the animated sequence. No word, as of yet, if animation will play any part in the new film.

Thoughts?

“Mary Poppins Returns” stars: Emily Blunt as the practically-perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn any task into an unforgettable, fantastic adventure; Lin-Manuel Miranda as her friend Jack, an optimistic street lamplighter who helps bring light—and life—to the streets of London; Ben Whishaw as Michael Banks; Emily Mortimer as Jane Banks; and Julie Walters as the Banks’ housekeeper Ellen; with Colin Firth as Fidelity Fiduciary Bank’s William Weatherall Wilkins; and Meryl Streep as Mary’s eccentric cousin, Topsy. The film also introduces three new Banks’ children played by Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and newcomer Joel Dawson. Angela Lansbury appears as the Balloon Lady, a treasured character from the PL Travers books and Dick Van Dyke is Mr. Dawes Jr., the retired chairman of the bank now run by Firth’s character.

Mary Poppins Returns hits theaters on Dec. 25.
