HTC needs a hit, and the upcoming U12 might just become one. The Taiwanese company’s been struggling but appears to have restrategized by inserting new leadership and focusing on a smaller lineup. Specifications for the 2018 flagship leaked over the weekend, and now we can see the direction HTC would like to go in this year.
The specs were leaked by LlabTooFeR, a well-known insider on all things HTC. Evan Blass, the longtime insider covering the whole mobile industry, then followed-up to confirm.
From the outside, the U12 should align closer to modern flagships. HTC dropped the ball last year when the U11 shipped without 18:9 aspect ratio for the screen.
HTC’s next flagship will also have water and dust resistance, Edge Sense for pressure sensitivity, and the option for a multi-SIM model.
Components included in the leak are a 5.99-inch Quad HD+ display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845, up to 6GB of RAM, up to 256GB of storage, Sony-made 12MP and 16MP cameras on the back, an 8MP front-facing camera, a 3420mAh battery, and a fingerprint scanner.
The software will be based on Android 8.0, but HTC’s Sense 10 should sit atop it. HTC will, however, include Treble for software updates that arrive in a timely manner. The leak even says the U12 will ship with facial recognition.
Expect to see the U12 debut sometime this spring. HTC skipped MWC 2018 due to Samsung’s presence there, so the company is now aiming the launch the U12 at a solo event in March or April.
