Returning for its second season on Apple Music is Carpool Karaoke, the popular segment-turned-show that Apple bought in 2016 and began streaming last year.
CBS, which produces the show that Apple distributes through its music streaming service, announced the renewal during its Q4 2017 earnings report. The show started on James Corden’s The Late Late Show, achieved global recognition, and then landed on Apple Music as a standalone series.
Celebrities are partnered in a vehicle driving around, singing music, and asking each other questions. It’s a simple idea, but the celebrities often make it entertaining with their personal stories as much as their vocal cords.
Apple and CBS haven’t said how many episodes will be made for the second season, but the first had just under twenty. Apple’s push as into original programming with additional shows as well as Carpool Karaoke‘s massive appeal should allow for a similar number of episodes to comprise the second season set to stream sometime in 2018.
The Cupertino-based company is expected to drop $1 billion for original programming this year, and projects currently in development come from Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Anniston, and Steven Spielberg.
Carpool Karaoke, however, isn’t included in the broader video streaming strategy planned for the years ahead. It’s merely an extension of a segment made specifically for Apple Music.
