Essential Phone available in three new colors—but act fast

After a brief teaser earlier this week, Essential has launched its phone in three new colors: Ocean Depths, Stellar Gray, and Copper Black. But you’ll need to act fast, because the newest colors are only being offered for a limited time.

For many, the latest additions to the Essential Phone lineup were a long time coming. When the company introduced its smartphone in May of last year, Ocean Depths and Stellar Gray were included in the initial announcement. But due to unforeseen production issues, the colors were delayed indefinitely; even the white model didn’t become available until last October.

Unfortunately, Essential is charging $599 for the new models, which is a $100 premium over the standard black and white. According to Essential, the complex nature of coloring ceramic, along with the limited run, warrants the extra cost. When you see the Ocean Depths model, you’ll certainly appreciate the craftsmanship that went into engineering the custom color.

Despite early production issues, the Essential Phone has evolved into one of the market’s best devices for the price ($499), offering a stellar design and clean software. The company has also been prompt about releasing security updates, and it’s currently working on the release of Android 8.1.

Perhaps the new colors will garner more interest in the company, as Essential has reportedly sold fewer than 90,000 units since its debut handset went on sale. It was always going to be hard for the startup to challenge the likes of Apple and Samsung, but even that number has to be lower than the company anticipated.

Below is the release schedule for the three new color options:

  • Ocean Depths will go on sale today at 12pm PST
  • Stellar Gray will go on sale Tuesday, February 20 at 12pm PST
  • Copper Black will go on sale Thursday, February 22 at 12pm PST
