AirPods owner claims wireless headphones exploded

A Tampa, Florida man claims one of his AirPods exploded while listening to “a dance mix,” reports WFLA.

According to Jason Colon, who was at LA Fitness at the time of the incident, his right AirPod suddenly began smoking in the middle of a workout. A few minutes later, and the AirPod had exploded into a splintered mess.

“It’s the craziest thing I ever went through,” Colon told WFLA.

Luckily for Colon, he had the wherewithal to remove the AirPods from his ears before the explosion happened.

“I don’t know what would’ve happened to my ear,” Colon said. “But I’m sure since it hangs down, it could’ve been [my] earlobe. Earlobe could’ve been burnt.”

Since launching in 2016, reported incidents about the AirPods have been few and far between. The only recent controversy was the lack of supply during the holiday period last year. In other words, AirPods don’t exactly have a reputation for exploding.

In any case, WFLA reports Apple has reached out to Colon and is currently investigating the incident.

“Just because it happens to me doesn’t mean it won’t happen again,” Colon warned.
