The masterminds behind HBO’s Game of Thrones are making peace with the Force. According to Lucasfilm, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are making the journey from Winterfell to a galaxy far, far away to write and produce a new series of Star Wars films.
The new series will be completely separate from the recently-announced trilogy coming from Rian Johnson, who also directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
The two creators are best known for bringing George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire—otherwise known as Game of Thrones—to the small screen. The two have not only built a reputation for being visual innovators, but narrative innovators, beautifully adapting Martin’s series of epic fantasies.
Bringing even more talent into the Star Wars universe bodes well for the larger franchise, which is going to live on well beyond the Skywalker saga. It’s unclear how Benioff and Weiss are going to approach the Star Wars universe, but one can bet it will be very violent.
According to Lucasfilm, no release dates have been set for the new films.
