The U12 isn’t likely anywhere close to becoming official, but the high-end phone might’ve just made an appearance in Taiwan. HTC brought an unidentified device to an industry event relating to 5G connectivity that one mobile industry insider claims to be the company’s next flagship.
While not providing the images himself, Evan Blass of VentureBeat revealed the four shots are showing the U12. He said “this lightly obfuscated handset on display” is HTC’s upcoming high-end phone to carry the company through the year ahead. Blass first refers to the unit as the HTC Imagine before clarifying that’s the codename for the U12.
No one at the industry event confirmed whether or not the device was HTC’s U12.
Specifications remain up in the air. It’s mere speculation, but the U12 is believed to have a Quad HD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor.
HTC’s 2018 flagship isn’t expected for a few more months. Since the Galaxy S9 will make its debut at MWC 2018 in late February, HTC and other companies have decided to skip the Barcelona-based trade show to avoid clashing with Samsung. The U12 should debut in March or April with availability following closely after an announcement. A lot is riding on the U12, too, because HTC hasn’t been very successful financially in recent years.
