Mercedes-Benz likes to dabble in a little bit of everything. It has luxurious sedans, rugged outdoors vehicles and a rich line-up of SUVs. Where it has dropped the ball is with hatchbacks, and it has decided to right this wrong with the 2018 A-Class hatchback.
The A-Class hatchback had been left in a decrepit state for a while now, missing most of the newer features of its brethren. Its design wasn’t bad either, but you could tell it was a design that was from a few years ago. The 2018 does away with this and is brought up to modern standards.
Mercedes-Benz refined the entire design of the A-Class hatcback, borrowing elements from its other cars. The front fascia, including the grille and headlights, looks like they were lifted off the 2019 CLS Mercedes-Benz showed off at the 2017 L.A. Auto Show. It looks a lot meaner. The backward checkmark DRLs are the perfect accent.
Even the rear features a polished design that is understated but goes a long way in making the hatchback appealing.
It doesn’t just look good outside, its interior doesn’t disappoint. Mercedes included what is becoming its marquee gigantic single panel that houses the instrument cluster and center infotainment display. The display runs from the left to the right nearing the passenger. You can configure the displays into two 7-inch displays, two 10.25-inch displays or one of each. This means the instrument cluster is all-digital, making it ultra-customizable by changing gauges and information you want to be displayed.
The infotainment system is powered by Mercedes Benz User Experience, or MBUX for short. Just like past Mercedes-Benz infotainment systems, it will be controlled through a touchpad. The most notable feature about MBUX is that it comes with an AI assistant. You can instigate the assistant by saying the keyword, “Hey, Mercedes.”
Mercedes also included all kinds of driving assistance features like lane keep assist, forward collision warning and automatic breaking.
Under the hood, three types of engines will live. The A200 is a 1.4-liter inline-4 gas engine with 162 horsepower. The A250 is a 2.0-liter I4 gas engine with 224 horsepower. The other engine is a A180d diesel engine that produces 116 horsepower. As standard, the A-Class hatchback will come with front-wheel drive, but it can be configured with all-wheel drive.
Here is where the bad news comes. Mercedes-Benz is bringing the A-Class sedan to the U.S. after a 20 year wait later this year, but the hatchback, which I have been waxing poetic about, unfortunately will not make the trip. If it makes you feel any better, it will be available in Canada.
Mercedes-Benz did not reveal how much the A-Class hatchback will cost in Europe when it arrives later this year. The rest of us here in the States will just peruse through the images of A-Class hatchback, hoping one day Mercedes-Benz changes its mind and imports it.
