The Dodge Ram 1500 truck has always been a rugged vehicle meant to deliver maximum performance. The automaker’s latest incarnation delivers on those staples, and throws in a few unexpected forward-looking features that make 2019 Ram 1500 an unexpected revelation.

First, lets talk about the number one selling point for the Ram 1500: overall power and usability. The 2019 version sheds about 225 pounds over the previous model in part due to the new frame made of 98-percent high-strength steel. That, along with the impressive powertrain, and the Ram 1500 has a 2,300 pound payload and a maximum trailer tow capacity of 12,750 pounds.

Speaking of powertrain, here’s where one of the unique wrinkles presents itself. Dodge incorporated an eTorque mild hybrid system to make significant gains in fuel efficiency for the two available engines: a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 and the 5.7-liter HEMI V8. The eTorque system utilizes a 48-volt battery pack to enable start/stop, short-term torque assist and brake energy regeneration.

The V6 offers 305 horsepower and 269-pound feet of torque and the V8 ups the ante to 395 horsepower and 410-pound feet of torque.

Moving inside, the Ram 1500 continues to offer its unique blend of optimal space and rugged finishes. But the standout feature is the gigantic 12-inch center console display. It doesn’t quite match the size of Tesla’s display found in its cars, but it comes very close. And it’s in a powerful pick-up truck, no less.

Dodge incorporates multiple functions with the display in the form of always-presents icons at the bottom for media, seat and A/C controls. Powering the system is Dodge’s infotainment software called UConnect. As you might expect, it’s not the most intuitive and it doesn’t look that great either, but Dodge supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to overcome that hurdle.

When you are using either third-party system, they will only occupy the top half of the display with the bottom half still offering easy access to key controls of the car.

Here are some of the other important details the 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 offers:

  • Full LED Adaptive Front Lighting System
  • 4×4 Off Road package with electric locking rear axle, tune shocks and Hill-descent Control
  • FRD shocks with air suspension
  • Active Noise Cancellation in the cabin
  • Wireless charging
  • 900 watt, 19-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system
  • 4G Wifi Hotspot

Dodge didn’t reveal pricing or availability, but it did say to expect the 2019 Ram 1500 in dealers during the first quarter of 2018.
