It was a landmark year for genre movies at the box office. Starting off with the terrific Logan and ending the year with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, there were plenty of great movies to watch. Now that 2018 is upon us, it's time to look forward to the movies coming out over the next several months. As is the case every year, there are a lot of comic book movies coming out, but there's also a ton of other movies that look really interesting.
Below is a list of movies everyone should be excited about.
- Release date: February 6, 2018
- Director: Ryan Coogler
- Note: It will be the last Marvel movie before Avengers: Infinity War.
First on the list is Black Panther, the first of three Marvel movies coming out in 2018. We got our first glimpse of Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War, and he kicked some serious ass. By the end of the movie, he housed the rogue Captain America and Winter Soldier. We don't know if they will appear in the movie, but it's highly possible.
Taking place in the mysterious Wakanda, we are going to find out a lot more about T'Challa's home as he takes the reign of his kingdom that will likely set the stage for Thanos to arrive on Earth in Avengers: Infinity War.
Ready Player One
- Release date: March 30, 2018
- Director: Steven Spielberg
- Note: The movie adaptation is differing from the book in several key points.
The pop culture references are strong in the first trailer for Ready Player One, based on the 2011 novel by Ernest Cline. If you pay close attention, you'll spot plenty of fun Easter Eggs, including an appearance by the Iron Giant. The second trailer brought along even more Easter Eggs that likely made your head spin.
One of the reasons we're most excited about this movie is to see how Steven Spielberg can make this book come to life with all of those classic characters running around.
Avengers: Infinity War
- Release date: May 4, 2018
- Director: Anthony and Joe Russo
- Note: Thanos has appeared in three Marvel movies before Infinity War.
It is finally here. After years of building up the hype, Thanos has arrived on Earth in Avengers: Infinity War, and he is ready to kick the crap out of the Avengers. And judging from the first trailer, he will do just that early and often. The full Avengers team will team up for the first time. Star-Lord and the rest of the Guardians are finally meeting up with Iron Man, Thor and Captain America. That should be really fun.
Solo: A Star Wars Story
- Release date: May 25, 2018
- Director: Ron Howard
- Note: The last Star Wars movie until Episode IX comes out in December 2019.
The second Star Wars anthology movie will focus on one of the most well-known characters of the franchise, Han Solo. Many of the details about the movie have been kept under wraps. There has only been one image from the set, but no posters or a teaser trailer yet. That will change early in 2018, but for the time being, all we can do is speculate.
- Release date: June 1, 2018
- Director: David Leitch
- Note: Deadpool director Tim Miller didn't return due to creative differences with Ryan Reynolds.
The Merc with a Mouth is returning in 2018. After the raucous first entry that was a box office smash, a sequel was quickly green lit. Unlike Solo, details for Deadpool 2 have been constant. From the odd phone booth teaser to the more recent one featuring a Bob Ross-esque Deadpool teaching us how to paint, the hype has been steadily building for the movie. But the main reason to be excited about the film is who will be opposing Deadpool—Cable (Josh Brolin). Looks like Deadpool finally has a real challenger.
The Incredibles 2
- Release date: June 15, 2018
- Director: Brad Bird
- Note: Nearly the entire voice cast of the original returned for the sequel.
Pixar made us wait 17 years, but we're finally getting The Incredibles 2. Details are sparse about the plot, with only a minor teaser revealing that Jack-Jack is causing a ton of trouble for Mr. Incredible. So far, the only thing we know is Mr. Incredible will have to take care of Jack-Jack while Elastigirl is away saving the world. That's very little to go on, but we're in.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
- Release date: June 22, 2018
- Director: J.A. Boyana
- Note: Jeff Goldblum returns as Dr. Ian Malcom.
The first trailer for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom gave us a real good look at what will happen in the movie. It looks like it'll be a non-stop action ride, to say the least. And of course, Chris Pratt, strapping as ever, will again be reunited with his velociraptor buddy, Blue.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix
- Release date: November 2 ,2018
- Director: Simon Kinberg
- Note: The X-Men will join the MCU in the near future.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is the latest movie in the X-Men franchise, and possibly the last. After defeating Apocalypse, the X-Men have become household names, continuing to save the world. The movie's plot will follow the events of the Dark Phoenix storyline, outlining Jean Gray's embracement of a dark power that turns her against the X-Men.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
- Release date: November 16, 2018
- Director: David Yates
- Note: J.K. Rowling returned to write the script for the sequel.
In the second installment of the Fantastic Beasts franchise, the attention has now shifted to Dark Wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp). He was only briefly alluded to in the first chapter, before the big reveal at the end, but now he will be the primary antagonist taking on his mortal nemesis—Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law).
- Release date: December 21, 2018
- Director: James Wan
- Note: This is the only DC movie coming out in 2018.
By the time Aquaman comes out in December 2018, it will have been more than a year since a DC movie has come out. But the wait will be worth it to see Jason Momoa kick some ass as the ruler of the seven seas. We're also interested to learn why he's such a lone wolf and why he rejected the crown as King of Atlantis.
