One of Netflix’s upcoming anime looks completely bananas

Netflix decided to make a big push into anime earlier this year, going after Japanese-speaking audiences and Western anime-loving viewers alike. One of the most intriguing new shows they previewed was Devilman: Crybaby.

Devilman, created by Go Nagai, is one of those legendary anime characters that every anime fan seems to be familiar with even if they haven’t seen any of the actual anime or read the manga. Now, the character is getting a new series directed by one of anime’s most creative directors, Masaaki Yuasa.

Check out this wild trailer:

Even without subtitles, it’s still a blast. Yuasa’s shows look totally different from anyone else out there, with smooth animation and buck wild transformations. He’s responsible for anime classics like Mind Game and more recent eye-blasters like Kaiba. He even did an episode of Adventure Time.

Netflix’s anime offerings have been okay thus far, but Devilman: Crybaby seems to suggest the company is leaning into it hard and picking some truly interesting stuff. Devilman: Crybaby is set to hit Netflix in 2018.
