We have movies based on comics, movies based on other movies, movies based on TV shows. Now it’s time to unleash a whole world of movies based on some of our favorite toys and tabletop games. Paramount Pictures announced this week a whole list of dates for upcoming movies, including titles like Dungeons & Dragons, G.I. Joe, and more, set to begin in 2020.
G.I. Joe is up first with a March 27, 2020 release date, based on the toy line that populated toy shelves right up through the early 2000s and periodically since. Next up is the lesser-known Micronauts, based on the toy line from the late 70s, known for its huge collection of interchangeable parts. That movie is set to hit on October 16, 2020.
Moving into 2021, though, Paramount is branching out with a Dungeons & Dragons movie, releasing July 23, 2021. We can only hope it’ll be better than the 2000 movie featuring Marlon Wayans and Jeremy Irons.
Woof. That wouldn’t even qualify as a YouTube fan film these days.
Following that is another Hasbro-based property on October 1, 2021. I’m pulling for Visionaries or M.A.S.K. (which stands for Mobile Armed Strike Kommand, of course). Cross your fingers with me.
Paramount hasn’t announced who might be directing or writing these movies, only that they’re happening and have some producers attached. io9ˆnotes that there were rumors that G.I. Joe could end up at the center of a cinematic universe of Hasbro properties. With the success of the MCU, it’s hard not to wonder if that might not still be in the works.
We’ll likely be seeing things more clearly closer to 2020. Get ready for more of that pun.
