The winter Steam sale is here – brace your wallets

It was only a matter of time. You’ve been tucking cash under your virtual mattress, and now’s the time to go buck wild. It’s worth remembering that unlike in the past, Steam sale prices are now set in stone. There aren’t any surprises like Flash Deals to sit and wait at your keyboard for. The sale goes until January 4, so you can always load your Steam Wishlist up now and drop the cash after you find out what games Santa is going to stuff in your stocking.

Here are some of our favorite deals, though, each worth checking out.

Elite Dangerous, the huge space sim that gamers are still digging up new stuff in, is 75% off at just $7.49. If you dig exploring the vast reaches of space, you can’t go wrong with that kind of price.

Prey, meanwhile, is 50 percent off, ringing up at $19.99. Fans of games like System Shock and BioShock should definitely check this game out. It hit over the summer and didn’t quite sell as well as publisher Bethesda was hoping, but it’s a fun first-person game with all the variety of those classic shooters and a gorgeous art deco architectural style that’s a pleasure to explore.

Also 50 percent off is Vanquish, the re-release of PlatinumGames’ action-shooter that has you wearing a robot suit basically designed for the express purpose of pulling off sweet action moves. A 4K overhaul means this game still looks gorgeous and it happens to perform beautifully. On top of that, it’s just $9.99.

If you want some weirdly-addictive local multiplayer, though, you can’t go wrong with Duck Game, available for just $5.19 at 60 percent off. The recipe is easy: Get three friends over, pick a duck, pick a hat, and start blowing each other away. Press B to quack to really rub in your win.

If you want to die, Dark Souls II and III are on sale for $9.99 and $14.99 respectively, while platformer Cuphead is 15 percent off – $16.99. In the bang-for-buck department, The Witcher III: Wild Hunt: Game of the Year Edition is $19.99 (60% off), and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is $15.99 (20% off). Oh, and Portal 2, in case you somehow missed it or haven’t picked it up yet, is $1.99 at 90% off.

Whatever you’re looking for, there’s something out there, just as long as it’s not PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Remember, the sale goes through January 4.
