Ready Player One’s new trailer has enough easter eggs to last until real Easter

What if, instead of your movie having an easter egg, your whole movie was an one? With the latest trailer for Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, that sure seems like the case.

This trailer gives those of us who haven’t checked out the super-popular novel a bit of the skinny on the world and the basic story. In a pretty grim version of the future, anyone who can spends their free time in a place called OASIS, a sort of virtual reality MMO that anyone can log into and visit any world they can imagine. The creator of this world announces his death via pre-recorded video, and tells the world that there’s are three secret keys in his world that will give the owner control of the system. Our protagonist, Wade Watts, teams up with another member of the game to find the clues, but quickly finds himself coming up against a megacorporation with designs on controlling the game world because, of course.

The trailer, even moreso than the original, is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it list of easter eggs. I spotted, including some more obvious ones, the following list, below the cut for spoilers.

The Ford Falcon XB GT Coupe 1973 from the Mad Max movies, also called the V8 Interceptor, the original Batmobile, with Batman inside, Street Fighter‘s Ryu, the Ninja Turtle van, the DeLorean from Back to the Future (that one’s hard to miss), Deathstroke and maybe Harley Quinn, Blanka from Street Fighter, the BigFoot monster truck, the cycle from Akira, all three Battletoads, the Joker and definitely Harley Quinn, Tracer from Overwatch, Chun-Li from Street Fighter, Lara Croft of Tomb Raider, Sagat from Street Fighter, a Gundam mobile suit, and the Iron Giant. I’m pretty sure I missed a bunch in there. Like a few Street Fighter characters. And there were more that I recognized but couldn’t place.

If your favorite part of Wreck-It! Ralph was the huge list of video game characters and in-jokes, as it was for many, then it seems like Ready Player One is going to be the ultimate feast. The movie is set to hit this March.
