Ben Affleck’s time as Batman is coming to an end very soon. He may stick around for another appearance in a DC movie, but it is highly unlikely he will wear the Dark Knight suit in Matt Reeves’ standalone Batman movie.

In a lengthy breakdown of the DC movie line-up, Variety shed new light on what Matt Reeves wants to do with his upcoming The Batman movie, and one of the important moves involves recasting the role. Reeves reportedly wants to recast the role and bring on fresh talent to take up the storied mantle of Bruce Wayne.

This should come as a surprise to no one. Over the past year, there have been near constant reports of Ben Affleck seeking to get out of the role he took on back in 2013 as preparation for Batman v. Superman began. It was supposed to be the beginning of a mega-successful franchise that could possibly surpass Marvel’s lofty standards. That did not happen.

Batman v. Superman failed miserably, and so did Suicide Squad, and eventually, the person who brought Affleck on board, Zack Snyder, departed from his role in directing DC movies. Justice League is also looking like a box office failure (on top of already being a critical failure). It hasn’t exactly been the dream job Affleck envisioned it would be, and thus he’s been looking for a way out ever since talking about exiting the role gracefully.

Matt Reeves agrees with him and is looking for a new face to become Batman. Last month, it is was reported that Jake Gyllenhaal was being eyed for the role. At the time, that was mostly brushed aside as another rumor, but that may very well happen now. He certainly has the acting chops to take up the mantle.
