Tesla announced its highly anticipated electric semi truck last month to a lot of fan fare. It goes without saying that it is an impressive truck, but unfortunately it won’t enter production until 2019. That isn’t stopping companies from placing orders, with the most recent being a big beer maker.
Anheuser-Busch, the maker of Budweiser and Bud Light, put in an order for 40 Tesla semi trucks that will join its fleet. This is one of the largest orders Tesla has received yet. Each reservation requires a $5,000 deposit from Auheuser-Busch, totaling $200,000 for all 40 trucks.
The price of the semi truck hasn’t been revealed, but it is expected to cost around $150,000. That means Auheuser-Busch is shelling out (at least) a hefty $6 million for the trucks. But that’s part of the plan for the beer giant. In a statement regarding the semi truck reservations, Anheuser-Busch revealed it’s plan is to invest in cutting edge technology while cutting its carbon footprint up to 30-percent by 2025.
During the unveiling of the truck, Tesla said the truck will have a 400-mile range with the capability of charging from empty to full in 30 minutes. Tesla didn’t go into specifics about the autonomous driving abilities the semi truck will be equipped with, but it’s expected to have some form of Autopilot as well as the standard inclusion of safety features like Lane and Drive Assist.
This isn’t the first time Anheuser-Busch has jumped headfirst into new technology. Just last year, it partnered with Uber to deliver 50,000 cans of Budweiser across a 120-mile trek using its self-driving technology.
