Qualcomm today announced it is partnering up with Baidu to optimize its DuerOS conversational artificial intelligence system to work with Snapdragon hardware, including the newly announced Snapdragon 845 processor.
Baidu’s DuerOS AI assistant offers some of the same functionality you’d find with Google Assistant and Amazon’s Alexa. It will take advantage of Qualcomm’s Aqstic audio codec to deliver an always on assistant, automatically activating when you use the phrase: “Xiaodu Xiaodu.”
Echo cancellation and noise suppression will be utilized to make sure you can access the assistant in just about any circumstance. The feature will not only work with mobile devices using the Snapdragon 845 chip, but IoT (Internet of Things) devices.
“The collaboration with Baidu will bring AI for voice enabled solutions to next-generation Snapdragon mobile platforms, allowing users to wakeup smartphones and IoT devices using their voice in their natural language at any time and at extremely low power, while utilizing Baidu’s DuerOS voice services,” related Qualcomm senior vice president Keith Kressin.
Qualcomm’s newfound partnership with Baidu ensures that it stays ahead in its pursuit of artificial intelligence development. It’s not clear if this will affect U.S. customers. Current U.S. smartphones powered by Snapdragon processor already have their own assistants (Google Assistant, Alexa, Bixby). It may just be used in China, where Baidu is based, for certain devices, but those details weren’t revealed.
