HomePod launch delayed by Apple until “early 2018”

If you had Apple’s HomePod speaker on your holiday shopping list you’re going to be sorely disappointed.

According to a statement given to CNBC, Apple’s smart speaker is going to miss its launch window of December. “We can’t wait for people to experience HomePod, Apple’s breakthrough wireless speaker for the home, but we need a little more time before it’s ready for our customers,” Apple said in a statement. “We’ll start shipping in the US, UK and Australia in early 2018.”

The HomePod is Apple’s answer to the Amazon Echo and Google Home, but packing a lot more speaker technology than those other devices. The price, however, certainly reflected that as it was announced back at WWDC in June of this year that it would retail for $349.

No reason was given for the delayed launch, but missing the holiday shopping season is certainly going to be reflected in the company’s financial reports. Google is offering massive discounts on its Home and Home Mini devices this season, and Amazon hasn’t announced its sales yet, but there are sure to be some discounted Echos coming in the near future.

Apple did not state the reason for the delay, and we may never know what it was considering the level of secrecy the company maintains.
