Disney is in talks to purchase some of 21st Century Fox’s media business as the company pivots toward news and sports, according to a CNBC report.
The two corporations are reportedly participating in unprecedented negotiations that would make Disney’s unstoppable machine even larger. If a deal is struck, it could mean we’ll finally see characters like Professor X and Wolverine join the Avengers on the big screen.
Fox reportedly wants to put its resources behind news and sports while moving away from entertainment. “The company is said to believe that a more tightly group of properties around news and sports could compete more effectively in the current marketplace,” CNBC said in its report.
The deal is attractive to Disney because it would bolster the studio’s expanding media empire, which includes Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios. Imagine the possibilities beyond Marvel’s current Marvel Cinematic Universe plans. After whatever happens with Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, Disney will have the pieces to introduce X-Men and Fantastic Four into a future Avengers flick.
I actually really like the direction Fox is going in with its current X-Men lineup. Deadpool 2 is on the horizon while Logan was a beautiful and fitting end for the character. Up next is New Mutants, which brings horror into the X-Men universe. It’s unclear how (or if) Disney would alter these approaches.
All I know is the prospect of seeing Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine join the Avengers—even though he says he’s retired from the character—is incredibly enticing.
