Since launching on October 27, Super Mario Odyssey has gone on to become Nintendo’s fastest-selling Mario game in the U.S. Better than Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy, etc., etc. The game is that good.
Part of the game’s success comes down to the delightful marketing campaign leading up to the game’s release. Nintendo also has to thanks the Switch’s unmitigated success—the console has sold nearly 8 million units since launching in March.
Nintendo proudly pointed out that Super Mario Odyssey has a critical review average of 97 on Metacritic.com, with over 40 perfect scores.
“This makes Super Mario Odyssey the best-reviewed game on Metacritic for any system of the last three years, tied only with Nintendo Switch launch game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” Nintendo wrote in a press release.
Since going on sale, Super Mario Odyssey has sold two million copies, with 1.1 million of those here in the U.S. That’s a pretty good haul considering the game hasn’t been available for that long. And with the holidays coming up, chances are that figure will rise considerably.
Which is to say, the admiration and attention for Nintendo this year is well deserved. The company bounced back from the Wii U by introducing a portable console that fans absolutely adore, and Super Mario Odyssey epitomizes why Nintendo is so beloved.
