The price of Apple’s AirPower accessory may have leaked

During Apple’s iPhone X event, the company unveiled a new wireless charging accessory called AirPower, saying it would be available early next year. Conspicuously missing from the announcement was how much AirPower would cost, but freshly leaked details may have let the cat out of the bag.

According to ThinkApple, AirPower could cost around $199 when it launches, making it one of the most expensive Apple accessories you can buy. Mind you, this isn’t a confirmed price, but it’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility.

What makes AirPower special is it can charge the iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods simultaneously. According to Apple, it’s working with Qi to incorporate the technology into the standard. The charging mat is also expected to support fast charging as well.

AirPower only really makes sense if you own multiple Apple devices supported by the accessory. If you only own an iPhone 8 or iPhone X, for example, the (supposed) high price of the accessory doesn’t seem worth it. You can get a wireless charging pad from Mophie for $60, and even then that’s on the pricier side.

Because AirPower isn’t expected to launch until next year, Apple probably won’t unveil a final price for several more weeks. Hopefully, the rumored price is just a placeholder for now, but considering what AirPower can do, $199 may be what consumers can expect to pay.
