Apple has confirmed the “edge stripe” issue that some customers have reported appearing on their Apple Watch Series 3.
According to MacRumors, stripes have been appearing on the edge of GPS variants of the Apple Watch Series 3. LTE models aren’t suffering from the issue. Apple confirmed the issue is a manufacturing defect in an internal memo it sent out to Genius Bar and Apple Authorized Service Providers. It doesn’t go into specifics about the reason for the issue, but does authorize free repairs for customers.
The memo, acquired by MacRumors, outlines how employees can confirm that Apple Watch Series 3 models are suffering from the issue. Per the instructions, employees will ask customers to rub their finger on the edge to smudge the display. If the stripes don’t appear, they will then ask customers to breathe on the display to create humidity.
At some point in the process, affected units will show the stripes and will be repaired.
There’s no word on just how many units are affected, but regardless, Apple will fix them all.
