Sucker Punch’s Infamous: Second Son was one of the first truly next-gen feeling games to hit PlayStation 4 thanks to its gorgeous, colorful world filled with stunning visual effects. Since that game hit in 2014, though, the developer has been dead silent – like a ghost. And that makes sense, because the studio just announced its next game, Ghost of Tsushima, at Sony’s Paris Games Week.
Ghost of Tsushima is an open-world game set, as you may have guessed from the name, in Japan. Here’s Sony’s official synopsis:
The year is 1274. Samurai warriors are the legendary defenders of Japan — until the fearsome Mongol Empire invades the island of Tsushima, wreaking havoc and conquering the local population. As one of the last surviving samurai, you rise from the ashes to fight back. But, honorable tactics won’t lead you to victory. You must move beyond your samurai traditions to forge a new way of fighting — the way of the Ghost — as you wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Japan.
With that timing and synopsis, Sucker Punch could be going for a story that presents an origin of ninja in Japanese history, which appeared around the 1400s but likely had antecedents before that.
With the way we’ve been begging for Ubisoft to do a ninja-themed Assassin’s Creed title, it seems like Ghost of Tsushima should fill the gap quite nicely. Sucker Punch hasn’t announced a release date for the game, but we can likely expect it in 2019.
