Rogue One’s Ben Mendelsohn in talks to play Captain Marvel’s villain

Of all the upcoming Marvel movies, 2019’s Captain Marvel might be the one I’m most excited about. The movie not only stars Academy Award-winning Brie Larson, but brings back Samuel L. Jackson in force, and takes the MCU back – way back – to the 1990s. Details otherwise have been pretty sparse, but now we might know against whom Marvel’s other Cap’n is facing off.

Deadline is reporting that Ben Mendelsohn, Rogue One‘s evil Orson Krennic, is in talks to play the villain in the movie.

There’s no word yet on which villain. With Marvel’s track record, I would expect him to play “Captain Marvel, but evil,” or “Evil Army Guy,” though he also looks exactly like a principal, so there’s that possibility, too. My real hope is that he’s a secondary villain and that the movie uses the opportunity to bring in the Marvel alien race called the Skrulls. But, again, Marvel’s track record indicates that he’ll just play a generic evil guy.

Even so, I’m glad to see news trickling out for the movie, just to continue to remind us that it exists and is really happening.

Captain Marvel is set to release shortly before Avengers 4. The first comes on March 6, 2019, while the latter drops two months later on May 3.
