DC’s Shazam! director confirms release window

Just like Marvel, DC has a ton of movies on its plate. There are the planned, near future movies like Justice League, the troubled projects like the Flash, and the unknown quantities, like Shazam!, the magic-fueled, wish-fulfillment answer to Superman. We haven’t heard much about the movie as of late, except that Dwayne Johnson will play Shazam’s nemesis, Black Adam – in another movie altogether.

In a post this week on Reddit, though, director David Sandberg (Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation) confirmed the release date that’s been on DC’s docket for years.

“How is Shazam! moving along?” one Redditor asked.

“April 2019,” came Sandberg’s reply. “It takes a long time to make [visual effect]-heavy movies.”

There’s very little else we know about Shazam!. No casting information has been announced, so we don’t know who to look for in either the role of Billy Batson, the boy who transforms into Shazam, nor Captain Marvel himself (that’s DC’s Captain Marvel, not Marvel’s Captain Marvel). It feels a bit strange that Black Adam won’t be in the Shazam! movie, considering that neither Shazam nor Adam have the cultural clout of characters like Batman and the Joker, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s definitely Dwayne Johnson, earth’s most popular human.

Among the many movies in the DCEU’s future, Shazam! is one of my most anticipated, if only because of how inherently silly the character is. The DCEU is desperately in need of some genuine levity, and who better than Earth’s Mightiest Mortal?

Shazam! hits theaters in just 16 months – in April 2019.
