While the MCU has only seen one hero successfully wield the mighty hammer Mjolnir – Thor Odinson himself – many beings have wielded the Norse god’s weapon through the years. The latest being to heft the hammer has been none other than Jane Foster, longtime friend of the Asgardian himself. Actor Karl Urban (Dredd, Star Trek, Thor) recently put forth the idea that Marvel’s latest comic-book Thor get some screen time. Movies.com asked Marvel boss Kevin Feige about the possibility, and he wasn’t ready to say no.
“We always look back to the comics to get those ideas… sometimes very specific storylines, like Civil War, sometimes just nuggets or characters like ‘Planet Hulk’ [which helped form part of the basis for Thor: Ragnarok],” he said. “So anything that’s happened in the comics, even female Thor, become great potentials and the ideas from which future movies can be born.”
Neither Feige nor Marvel are going to talk about Marvel’s far future plans just yet. With one Thor movie just days away and two more Avengers movies on the horizon, actor Chris Hemsworth has plenty of time left in his godboots.
With that said, the end of Avengers 4 marks the end of Marvel’s “Phase 3” movie series, and it’s assumed that at least one Marvel stalwart is going to eat it by the end of that movie. It’s kind of assumed that Captain America will be the one to sacrifice himself, though hey – why not Thor? It would give Chris Hemsworth a chance to work on his burgeoning comedy career and a new actor a chance to play the character.
Jane Foster’s Thor has proven controversial and popular at different times, but she’s far from the only other being to wield the weapon. Thor has been turned into a Frog (Throg), an alien named Beta Ray Bill has wielded Mjolnir, and Loki has bestowed powers on a movie director named Roger and, in a moment of particularly bad judgement, even Deadpool (kind of). Check out the gallery above to see some of the many wielders of Mjolnir in action.
