Fate of the Furious was in many ways a reboot for the Fast and Furious franchise. With Paul Walker’s emotional send-off in the previous movie, the focus turned to new characters and dynamics, chief among them was a budding bromance between the characters played by Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. Universal seems to have gotten the message loud and clear, because it has officially greenlit a spinoff movie focusing on the duo.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal has set a July 26, 2019 as the release date for the untitled Hobbs and Deckard action flick. The studio has tapped Chris Morgan, the writer for Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, to pen the script as well. Iron Man 3 director Shane Black is reportedly being eyed by Universal to direct the project.
Luke Hobbs is a Diplomatic Security Service Agent while Deckard Shaw is an assassin-turned-good guy. The Rock and Jason Statham’s characters were paired together in Fate of the Furious and the result was a surprisingly great.
Right after Fate of the Furious hit theaters, talk of the possible spinoff began but Universal hadn’t yet decided to go through with the project.
With Universal setting a release date for 2019, THR is also reporting Universal decided to push back Fast 9 back to 2020. The decision was a preemptive move to lengthen the production time in hopes of bringing back director Justin Lin, who led four Fast and Furious (3-6) movies before bolting to direct Star Trek Beyond.
No deal has been reached with The Rock or Jason Statham, but that likely is coming soon. It is unknown at the time if other Fast and Furious characters will make an appearance in the spinoff.
