More than 30 million people are now subscribed to Apple Music.
The last time we heard about the number of Apple Music subscribers was in June at WWDC 2017. Apple confirmed its music streaming service had 27 million subscribers at the annual conference, which means 3 million subscribers joined in just three months since. That’s also up from 20 million subscribers in December 2015. Apple adding about 1 million subscribers per month.
The music industry as a whole saw a 17 percent increase in revenue for the first half of 2017, due in part from Apple Music and other music streaming services’ rise.
Apple Music’s accelerating growth should make Spotify a little nervous as we head into 2018. The offering from Apple could be on its way to becoming the most popular paid music streaming service in the world. Apple Music, according to Billboard, has about half the number of subscribers that Spotify has. While Apple Music has 30 million subscribers, Spotify was last reported in July to have 60 million subscribers.
If Apple Music continues adding subscribers at its current rate and the competition sheds subscribers, Spotify could be surpassed by late next year or in 2019. There’s a lot that needs to happen for Apple Music to take the lead, though. It won’t occur by staying still.
The commitment to Apple Music is going beyond music streaming. Apple will be adding music-centric video content including interviews, documentaries, and advertisements. Its annual $1 billion investment in video will also touch original programming not related to music. The goal for Apple Music, however, to connect artists with listeners. Apple is encouraging artists to create exclusive content for Apple Music so that listeners feel more than sound alone.
