Super Mario Run to get biggest update yet

You know what would go great with that new iPhone 8 you just got? Super Mario Run, which Nintendo said is getting its biggest update yet on September 29.

The update will include a new mode, new world, new playable character, and several new items players can put in their Mushroom Kingdom. Players will also be able to listen to their own music, which will be reflected by their character wearing headphones.

The new mode will be called Remix 10, randomly splicing levels together for a greater challenge:

Remix 10 is a frenetic new mode in which you play a set of 10 super-short sections from Super Mario Run’s existing levels in quick succession. The stages are remixed with each attempt, and with rainbow-colored bonus medals strewn across these bite-sized stages, it’s a fresh challenge every time.

Additionally, the added World Star world will introduce nine new levels with new enemies and gameplay mechanics, though Nintendo didn’t say what those new mechanics would be.

The update will also introduce Daisy to the roster, making her the seventh playable character in the game.

If all this sounds pretty good to you, it should. Super Mario Run was a lot of fun when it launched, but subsequent updates have been sub-par—and Nintendo hasn’t added anything to make revisiting the game worthwhile. Friday’s update is just what the doctor ordered.

To celebrate the imminent update, Nintendo said it will drop the price of Super Mario Run by 50-percent; the discount goes from September 29 to October 12.
