iPhone 8’s “most durable glass ever” breaks just like all other glass

During the announcement of the new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, Apple claimed the new glass back was the “most durable glass ever.” Obviously, this was going to be put to the test when people got their hands on the new iPhone.

The results are exactly as expected. Glass breaks very easily, no matter how strong it is, and the iPhone 8 is no different.

JerryRigEverything, best known for testing the durability of phones, tested out the iPhone 8’s all-glass design and although it did survive a few drops, in the end, the glass still shattered.

He began the testing by seeing if the iPhone 8 could survive a drop from a sitting position on a bench. It survived the lone attempt. Then he moved on to testing a waist high drop. It took three attempts for the front glass to break and on the fourth attempt, the back glass broke too.

The final verdict is that the iPhone 8 may get away with a drop or two with some luck, but a drop at the wrong angle will break the glass without doubt. That’s not something you want because replacing the back glass is not cheap.

If you want to avoid breaking the glass, the best way to do so is just to use a case. There’s no way of getting around it. That’s a shame because the new glass back on the iPhone 8 looks fantastic.
