How to use Notification Dots on Android 8.0 Oreo

The handling of notifications on Android keeps getting better. Last year, Google added Direct Reply. That’s a way for those with Android phones and tablets to respond to messages without needing to switch apps. Rather than opening a different app, you can use Direct Reply to respond within a notification. For Android 8.0 Oreo, we have Notification Dots. They’re these little, you guessed it, dots that pin themselves to an app icon whenever a notification comes in.

Notification Dots are an extension of App Shortcuts, which also arrived in 2016. If you’re familiar with App Shortcuts, you’ll understand how the new feature works.

Here’s how to use Notification Dots on Android 8.0 Oreo:

  • Make sure your phone (or tablet) is on Oreo
  • When a notification comes in, goes to your home screen
  • Find the app icon that has a little dot in the top right corner, and long-press it
  • Preview the notification, tap it if it’s worth interacting with or dismiss it by swiping away
