It seems we’re not the only ones giving away free iPhones. Verizon is now in the giving mood, offering an augmented reality scavenger hunt with the help of Snapchat.
The hunt is taking place in eight cities across the U.S.—New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, Dallas, Denver, Atlanta and Chicago—with 256 iPhone 8s up for grabs if you solve all the clues. The most interesting part of the hunt is that it will all be done through the Snapchat app as contestants search for clues in AR.
To begin the hunt, contestants have to scan a Snapchat code that will give them instructions for the first clue.
One of the clues reads: “The 8 is hiding not uptown or down. It’s where our network shines and marquees light the town.” It’s quite cryptic, but that’s part of the fun. There are several other clues like this contestants will have to solve. Verizon says some of the 8s you have to find will be restricted to specific circumstances, only appearing at night or when it’s raining.
Using location services, users will be told how far they are from a prize and when they need to get there.
After users have unlocked all the clues, the last piece of the puzzle will be an iPhone 8 filter. Users will have to take a creative selfie with the filter and send it to Verizon. It’ll have to be really creative, because that’s the deciding factor here. Verizon will choose the winners at random based on their selfie with the iPhone 8 filter. Verizon stated, “The more creative you get, the better your chances.”
There’s only catch to the giveaway: the winners will have to sign up their free iPhone 8 on Verizon’s plan. It will not be an unlocked phone they can use with any carrier. The contest is an ingenious marketing tactic on Verizon’s part to stir up consumer interest in the iPhone8, but also draw them into its network.
The contest will run for four days, from Tuesday, September 19 to Friday, September 22 when the iPhone 8 is released.
