Star Wars: The Last Jedi is going to be in theaters before we know it. But right now, the wait for December feels like an eternity. So we’re going to snap up every scrap we can get. We’ve only seen one very short trailer, and now we might have an idea of when we can expect the next one to drop, and it’s thanks to Luke Skywalker himself.
In a since-deleted tweet, Mark Hamill replied to a fan’s plea for the next trailer date, saying that “It’s coming eventually – Watch Monday Night Football on Monday, October 9th – for no reason in particular.”
I saw the original tweet pass through my timeline before it disappeared, and Star Wars News managed to screengrab it:
Hamill is a bit of a Trickster, so it’s worth noting that that date might be nothing. But Hamill did delete the tweet. Monday Night Football airs on ESPN, though, and as others have noted, Disney owns both Star Wars and ESPN. Monday Night Football is also a good way to ensure that as many people as possible see the trailer at once thanks to its consistently high ratings. And let’s not forget that The Force Awakens‘ second trailer also premiered during Monday Night Football.
I wouldn’t place bets on it, but I think it’s safe to mark our calendars for Monday, October 9th.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi, directed by Rian Johnson, hits theaters on December 15, 2017. The sequel, currently titled Star Wars: Episode IX, was recently delayed from May 2019 to December 20, 2019 after a directorial change from Colin Trevorrow to Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams.
