When it comes to the planets of the Star Wars films, one planet has loomed large in the lore since day one that we have never seen, but it seems that is about to change.
We’ve heard the planet name Kessel always in reference to “the Kessel Run.” First, in 1977.
Han Solo: Fast ship? You’ve never heard of the Millennium Falcon?
Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi: Should I have?
Han Solo: It’s the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs. I’ve outrun Imperial starships. Not the local bulk cruisers mind you, I’m talking about the big Corellian ships now. She’s fast enough for you old man. What’s the cargo?
And then again in 2015.
Rey: This is the ship that made the Kessel Run in fourteen parsecs?”
Han Solo: Twelve!
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
In the films you have never heard just the name ‘Kessel,’ but in the Expanded Universe it is indeed a planet, and it is the home of one of the biggest spice mines in the galaxy. Now, it appears we’re finally going to see it in the untitled Han Solo film thanks to a tweet from Ron Howard on Wednesday.

Admittedly all he said was “Spicey?” but it doesn’t take an Astromech droid to put two and two together on this one. As the new film is to detail major events in Han Solo’s youth, it seemed a given the Kessel Run would play a part in the story, and that means needing a reason to make the journey.
We’ll see if our math was correct when the untitled Han Solo film is currently scheduled for release on May 25, 2018.
