Flash’s new trailer points to a more positive speedster in season 4

When Barry Allen stepped into the Speed Force at the end of The Flash season 3, we wondered where it would lead him. The entire season had been somewhat of a downer. A new trailer and plot synopsis, though, has us hopeful that we’re in for a healthier, happier superhero.

There are a few tidbits worth picking up on in the trailer. Cisco confirms that Barry will have a new suit when he does pick up the mantle of the Flash. And from some of the quick shots, it seems the time inside the Speed Force has changed Barry, leaving him a more powerful speedster than ever.

While Barry was the first of them, each speedster that has followed has been stronger than him in some way, with even Wally being faster than the supposedly fastest man alive. With the show moving away from supersonic villains, it seems like that question is finally being put to rest for a while.

But it’s not just his powers that have grown, it’s Barry himself. Executive producer Todd Helbing spoke with TVLine and offered up the following:

“Barry’s time in the speed force let him deal with all of the baggage that he had the last three seasons, everything with his mom and his dad and Flashpoint. So when he comes out, he’s sort of left that all behind. It does really allow Barry and Grant [Gustin], in a lot of ways, to play these scenes with a lot more lightness to it. The combination of the scripts being a lot more fun and more joke-ridden, and just the state that Barry’s in when he comes out, it’s really changed the show quite a bit. There’s definitely a comedic tonal shift that we’re really loving right now.”

It’s too early to say for sure, but it seems like the writers are taking the criticisms fans had of the previous season to heart and will be offering up something that fits the character himself a bit better. This, along with word of a stretchy new hero and some much-needed marital counseling has us crossing our fingers.

Here’s to hoping. The Flash season 4 premieres on October 10.
